If you’re planning a spontaneous autumn trip, there are plenty of options to choose from. Many countries are best visited in this off peak travel window with cheaper accommodation and you’ll avoid the crowds of tourists. Here are four of what I would consider the best destinations:
Cyprus
One of the hottest islands on the Mediterranean, temperatures in Cyprus stay high long into the winter. Head to the port of Limassol and soak up the sun at Coral Beach. This sweeping stretch of sand has great facilities, including sun loungers, and rarely gets crowded. The region is also home to some fantastic sightseeing, including Limassol Castle and the Roman amphitheater of Amathus. After all that fun, you can enjoy a traditional Cypriot feast at one of the many authentic restaurants.
Prague
One of Europe’s most beautiful cities, Prague is best visited in the winter. Explore the city’s Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site crammed with historical architecture and charming cafés. Prague Castle is also a must-see attraction which is said to be the largest ancient castle in the world. Once you’ve visited the many sights, take a break and indulge in the hearty Czech cuisine. Meat dishes are served alongside steaming dumplings and cabbage, which is best washed down with a local craft beer.
Malta
Boasting 300 days of sunshine, Malta is another destination for the sun worshipper with many beaches to choose from. The neighboring island of Gozo is better suited for those looking for some tranquility and off the beaten track excursions. Be sure to visit the natural spectacle known as the Azure Window — a limestone arch rising out of the sea which makes for an awe inspiring sight. It’s also worth taking a scuba diving course with some of the best dive sites in the world. Your underwater adventure can include caves, tunnels and spectacular shipwrecks.
Morocco
If it’s sun, sand and heaps of culture that gets you excited, Morocco could just be your new favorite place. Start your adventure in Marrakech, an ancient city which dates back to the 12thcentury. The market place of Jemaa el-Fna square is a feast for the senses where you can marvel at street performers or indulge in a shopping splurge with many vendors selling traditional jewelry and handcrafted goods. From here, travel south to Agadir, a beachside city which basks in sun throughout much of the year. There’s a terrific selection of affordable accommodation and exceptional Moroccan restaurants.
With so many last minute deals, there’s never been a better time to seek an autumn adventure. Explore one of these beautiful countries and enjoy an unforgettable experience.
