In mid-January Dan and I left Thailand for a week in Burma, after which we flew to Beijing and then traveled overland through Mongolia and Russia back towards Europe.
We spent a week in China, and then headed to Mongolia for two weeks. And then went into Russia for a month!
Dan hadn’t been to the Baltics yet so we popped into Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania after Russia. Then we spent two weeks in Poland (which wasn’t enough). Our end mark was the Balkans, so we made a short detour through Ukraine and then headed down through Slovakia and Hungary into Romania, and then through Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo, and Albania.
Finally we visited a friend in Bulgaria, which was a bit of a detour because we had flights leaving from Croatia.
After all that, we needed to find a place to settle down for a while, and we chose Norway! Now we’re living in a log cabin up in the mountains, with plans to continue to travel around a lot as well – as all Norwegians do!

Silvia, I found this blog on your FB page. This is truly amazing! I am so excited you are planning on coming to Bulgaria. I am actually going to be there this summer! My family has many spare rooms and I would be so excited if you dropped by! I am taking a tour of the country myself and would be thrilled if you and Dan would come see at least part of it with me. Please reply! I’ve been thinking about you lately and I really would love to catch up!

That’s an amazing trip! It would be interesting to have information about the cost to go to every country you visit…and also a total budget to try imitating you! =)
We actually did not travel that much, but please feel free to check our small route in former Yugoslavia. You will find a lot of interesting suggestions for saving money between Serbia, Bosnia and Croatia!

I am tracking my budget, so I’ll definitely try to write something up about my spending at the end of the trip!

Hello, this is an amazing trip !!
I am wondering how much you had spent for all your trip?
Silvia says
I averaged just under 20 USD per day, including all transportation, accommodation, food, etc.

Hi,
amazing blog! I find myself getting lost in your articles. Truly inspiring. With that said, I will be taking on my second longish term backpacking trip in January, starting in the Philippines but I want to end in Europe. Ive been thinking of doing the Beijing to Russia overland thing but research all seems so confusing to me. How did you do this, I also wouldn’t mind doing a stop over in Mongolia.
thank you, keep on with your amazing blog. I will be following you forever!

I just booked my train tickets at stations when I got to Russia – it was really easy, and didn’t require too much planning. You can read through my Russia posts for more info on how I did it 🙂
